Knotwork history

Many of my Knotting styles are interlaced Celtic & Chinese Knotting which is fast becoming a stunning way to display wearable art. Many artists from the past used Celtic knot designs in their work, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. And many clothing designs in the Elizabethan times had Celtic interlaced patterns.

Ornamental and symbolic knotwork have been practiced by many cultures, some much older then the 7th century.

Knotwork was the most prevalent Celtic Ornamental style from the 7th to 10th centuries. This style spread across Europe during the Early Middle Ages, and although the Celtic style was not the only artistic source of the period, it was by far the most complex and sophisticated.

Most knotwork uses symbols in the design. The use of symbolic knots can be seen as symbols of life and some as symbols of love; Like the Book of Kells it is about the word of God.

Symbols are all around us including the positive aspects of color. The intensity of color and its purity correspond to the purity of the symbolic meaning. Primary colors represent emotions while mixed colors represent the detail of the emotion.
